De Young Museum

When you approach the de Young Museum, located in Golden Gate Park, it is easy to forget that the museum is one of San Francisco’s oldest, having been founded in 1895. The structure that houses it today is a striking contemporary masterpiece designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, clad in copper that will oxidize with age to match the landscape around it. The institution’s current home opened in 2005, after its former building was damaged in 1989 in the Loma Prieta earthquake (following the addition of temporary braces, the museum continued to operate in that building for another 10 years). In addition to admiring the architecture, you’ll want to see the art inside too, of course. The de Young’s permanent collection of 27,000 works spans the globe, with pieces from Africa, Oceania and the Americas; the de Young also hosts significant traveling exhibitions.

Atop the de Young Museum

I highly suggest visiting the de Young Museum at Golden Gate Park. Not only is it in a great part of the city, with great art to boot, they have an incredible observation deck at the very top! This was my first time at the de Young Museum and seeing a sea of white buildings gives you the feeling of just how big the Bay Area is.

When San Francisco wants, …

… San Francisco knows how to employ green, white and blue to torment people with beauty! Take the elevator to the 9th floor of De Young Museum and be prepared to stretch the limits of how much visual drama you can take in!

Must see these Ruth Asawa sculptures

The de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is a wonderful spot to see art. Don’t miss the Ruth Asawa sculptures near the elevators to the Hamon Observation Tower. The play of shadows enhances the sculptural beauty of these artworks. And yes, do take the elevator to the 9th floor observation tower. Here you’ll have a 360 degree view of San Francisco; wonderful on a clear day and mysterious on a foggy day. Once you’ve seen all the exhibits inside the museum visit the outdoor sculpture garden and seek out the James Turrell Skyspace. Titled «Three Gems» it is a subterranean installation that features a view of the sky that highlights changing light and weather conditions outside. Café and gift shop on premises.

The de Young Museum: San Francisco’s Gem

With a brilliantly designed copper facade, 144 foot observation tower and sprawling grounds which seamlessly segue into the natural environment of Golden Gate Park: The de Young Museum is as beautiful as some of the works of art that adorn its’ halls and is a must when visiting San Francisco.

Golden Towering Heights

Included in your admission ticket to the fabulous De Young Museum, is access to the observatory tower. The views of Golden Gate Park, the Pacific and the city around you are more than special (and worth the ticket price). Keep in mind the fact that they close the tower at 4:30 PM, so be sure to plan your visit within the museum around the chance to get up top and back down. A special museum experience made even more spectacular with this view. Soak it up.

A 360-Degree View of San Francisco

After two days exploring the outdoors of Golden Gate Park, I was ready for something different. I was therefore excited to find out that the tower of the de Young Museum is open and free to the public. We just walked in the front door of the museum, asked which way to go to get to the tower, took the elevator up, and were rewarded with 360-degree views of the city from the tower’s glass walls. From here you can see the trees and gardens of Golden Gate Park, the green roof of the California Academy of Sciences, Coit Tower, and the surrounding hills of nearby neighborhoods and the Presidio National Park…definitely not to miss!

Chihuly to Hockney- An Incredible Curating Team!

The DeYoung Museum is worth a visit if only for the building itself: the spiral tower with a 360 view of the city is hard to beat. The simulated earthquake crack that kids can follow from the front sidewalk, through boulders, to the entrance, the incredible, permanent exhibit, and the I-have-never-been-disappointed rotating exhibits have ranged from Chihuly to YSL gowns. It is manageable in its layout and number of pieces, the range of pieces are oooh-inducing, and the setting is extraordinary. Stay parked and go for a walk in the park after grabbing a bite in the cafeteria. And if you are in SFO while the DeYoung flower show is on (usually May), it is a not to miss!!

Description

The main entrance is a gap of 9 meters driving through a copper covered walkway to a central courtyard giving access to an elegant living room with Italian sandstone floors where you can access some of the many exhibition halls of the museum. The sophisticated use by architects drawings combined with parallelograms and triangles are obtained spaces full of life and fluidity.

A long staircase leads visitors from the lower to the ground floor and glazed walkways leading to the numerous gardens and terraces of the museum. Other stairs lead to the exhibition halls on the second floor.

In the southwest corner down the sloping roof ends in a projection that protrudes on the cafe terrace. The terrace merges with the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden, which shades beyond the Japanese Tea Garden.

In the northeast corner tower commemorates that rose above the old building. Two structures link the museum in its narrow place, between the Music Concourse and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive to the large park surrounding it.

From the promenade between the Music Concourse and the facade of the museum, the viewer sees the palm trees on a continuous carpet of grass. But as you approach the entrance, addresses a series of narrow stone pathways that appear to connect the areas on both sides of the walkway. Banks are set intermittently on the roads.

The history of the de Young museum

The de Young museum emerged out of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 that cemented the then-new Golden Gate Park as more than San Francisco’s back yard, but one the premier green spaces in the country. Today, the Sphinx statue outside is one of the few remnants of the Egyptian revival architecture that contained the museum’s early, eclectic assortment of anthropological artifacts and artworks.

Redesigned after the 1906 earthquake by Louis Christian Mullgardt, the de Young reemerged in 1919 freshly renamed in honor of the co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle who’d championed the museum in its early years, as well as the park in which it was situated.

The Museum Today

The de Young Museum’s stock is among the most impressive of any museum in California. Its centerpiece is the collection of American art, which contains more than a thousand paintings, as well as 800 sculptures. These date back to 1670 and range up to very recent works. It is supplemented by two important bequests from the Rockefeller family collections. Meanwhile, the museum’s collection of costumes and textiles forms the largest of its type anywhere in the United States, and includes more than 12,000 separate pieces.

The city’s Fine Arts Museums, of which de Young now forms a part, decided in 1988 to commit to collecting contemporary artworks from around the world. This has led to a large number of acquisitions in fields such as conceptual and installation art, as well as new media such as video. In recent years, several important works have been brought into the collection, in particular sculptures by Cornelia Parker and Zhan Wang, as well as Sean Scully’s 2005 piece Wall of Light Horizon. The museum emphasizes works by Californian artists such as Jim Christiansen, Bruce Nauman, and Rachel Neubauer, though art by foreign artists such as Barbara Hepworth is also featured.

The de Young Museum’s other principal collections concern Pacific and African art. The African collection comprises over 1,400 items, with particular strength in the Sudanese and west-central Africa regions. The museum made the decision to arrange these works by theme rather than by strict geographical origin, thereby hoping to make their inherent qualities clearer. The Pacific, or Oceanic, collections are among the oldest at the museum, dating back to the 1890’s. The museum holds more than 3,000 pieces, including Maori wooden carvings and a large house post from Papua New Guinea.

Materials

Known for his experimentation with materials in their designs, Herzog & de Meuron have contributed to a modern structure that together with the original features remain, function successfully as a museum and become a monument of its kind as it was at the time the original museum.

The choice of natural materials for its construction allows the design to become part of the land it occupies.
The Museum has been constructed with warm materials and natural as copper, stone, wood and glass, making the new de Young Museum to mix and complements the surrounding natural environment.

Interior

Inside, hardwood floors sustainable production of eucalyptus and finishes create a warm atmosphere that accompanies visitors from one room to another.

The layout of the HVAC system improves indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The combined use of natural and artificial light provides optimum comfort for the display of art as well as energy saving

Facade

The skin of the facade required 431,000 kg of copper, 136,000 kg of glass and 7,200 copper panels of which no two are alike, were drilled and punched individually and facade covering 18.000m2. Other copper 13.000m2 covered the roof.

Perforated panels, used where the air intake or exhaust were needed, have been drilled with holes of different sizes that are orthogonal patterns. Although non-perforated leather construction gives an airy transparency, sunlight creates a continuous effect on the walls waving motion passed. The designers were green metal corrosion as a natural ecological cycle in line with the park.

Newer Structures

In more recent years, it has come to be acknowledged that the steel supports of some of these earlier structures had been badly damaged by salt from the Pacific sea air, and so a different approach would be needed to replacement buildings. Work on setting up new structures was delayed for some years, partly because severe damage had been caused by the effects of the 1989 earthquake in Loma Prieta. It was to be almost another decade before serious efforts to rebuild the museum to modern standards fully resumed.

Although a competition to design a new museum had been won in 1999, it was six years until the replacement building was ready. This was partly due to San Francisco’s susceptibility to earthquakes, which necessitated an imaginative approach to its architecture, including sliding plates allowing it to move with the ground during earth tremors. The city’s voters almost derailed the new project, twice rejecting bond measures on the grounds that the urban park location was unsuitable. The current building is entirely clad in copper, with more than five acres of new landscaped grounds.

Introduction

The de Young Museum was originally created as the Fine Arts Building and built as an extension to the pavilion California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 in Golden Gate Park San Francisco, California. The president of the organizing committee of the exhibition was H.de Michael Young, co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle, for whom the museum is named. It is usually called simply “The Young”.

The first collections of the museum grew as Young’s eclectic tastes over the years acquired a wide range of paintings and objects, mainly from South Pacifici. Eleven years after its opening, the great earthquake of 1906 caused significant damage in the building Winter Solstice, Midwinter Hall, forcing a half year closing for repairs.

Soon the museum needed new space to better serve its growing audience. Michael Young said planning for the building that would serve as a nucleus for future installations of the de Young Museum throughout the twentieth century.
The old museum was a bulky structure decorated with ornaments made of concrete, which began to fall and be dangerous, being finally eliminated in 1949. In 1989 the original building was completely destroyed by the Loma Prieta earthquake, his remains were finally demolished in 2002.

Through the years, de Young Museum has changed, with adjustments and additions. The most recent restoration was completed in 2005 and conducted by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron
